There is something about dark clouds that raise people’s spirits and excitement.  Combine this with a wedding day and you will find emotions high, happy and full of anticipation all round.  This was the mood felt at the Dunkley wedding which took place at the beautiful, Dornier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch.  A beautiful venue at the foot of the Stellenbosch mountains, surrounded by vineyards and forests.  The Dunkley’s could not have chosen a more perfect location.

Delsma Farm Wedding – Lara & Wiehann

Tell us about how you met.

We met each other on the 29th of August 2015 while out with friends. Wiehann introduced himself in a very convincing Irish accent which I loved!! He was leaving for the USA a month later and we had to make the most of our time together. It wasn’t difficult to feel comfortable together as we had an instant connection. I loved the fact that I could totally be myself with him.  He has a sense of humour and is easy to talk to and he knows what he wants out of life.

 

How did the proposal go down?

We went to Onrus for my birthday and Wiehann told me that we should go for wine tasting, without giving too much details. He took me to Domaine Des Dieux in the Hemel and Aarde Valley which has the most amazing view of the mountains. As we were sipping on our champagne he suggested we take one last photo. As we finished he started telling me how much he loved me and went on one knee… it was so special and the best birthday surprise and present I could have wished for. The lady at the tasting room was in on the whole thing and captured everything on camera.  Wiehann arranged everything for months to make sure it was perfect.

What was the style of your wedding and where did you find your inspiration?

We never had a specific style in mind but we wanted a relaxed/simplistic style with a pop of colour. We added some personal touches and DIY items. We found inspiration in a few Wedding magazines, Pinterest, suggestions from family/friends and most of all guidance from our decor and flower provider.  

 

Why did you choose your venue?

We had a few venues in the area that we wanted to visit and it was actually Wiehann’s sister that suggested Delsma Farm Wedding Venue. The one thing that stood out to me was the fact that Delsma Farm had so much accommodation on site for our guests, which was very important. The space where we would have the ceremony was by the river under big trees and we both just knew this was the one!

How did you decide on your dress and where did you find it?

My dress was designed and made by Annelie Designs in Saldanha. She has made wedding dresses for many of my family members so I knew her work was impeccable. I gave Annelie a few pictures of different styles and focus points that I liked. I wanted a simple ‘A’ line dress with some lace detail and a low cut back. She took all of those elements and created something out of a fairytale. 

 

Who made sure your make-up and hair looked beautiful?

Deline Engelbrecht from Anuk in Ceres was in charge of making us all look fabulous and she did an amazing job!! She made us feel comfortable and relaxed during the whole process and her work speaks for itself. All of the Mothers, Bridesmaids and myself looked and felt beautiful on the day. 

What was the most memorable moment of the day?

All I can remember is the nerves, no one can ever try to even explain how nervous it is asking a mother and farther if you can marry their daughter, asking the love of your life to marry you and finally what it is like on your wedding day when you stand in front of all of your friends and family and seeing her come down the aisle. I still get tears in my eyes when I see videos of Lara walking down the aisle, I think that would be something I would not forget for the rest of my life.

 

Who officiated the ceremony?

Alwyn Carstens from Welgelegen NG Church officiated the wedding. Alwyn also officiated Wiehann’s cousin’s wedding, did the funeral of Wiehann’s grandmother and also baptised Wiehann’s cousin’s first son, so it was a no brainer when we had to approach someone to officiate the wedding. Alwyn was absolutely great, it was a real pleasure sharing this experience with him and he made us feel so calm the day of the wedding.

 

Is there any special story behind your rings? Where did you find them?

Lara had previously shown me photos of rings that she really liked which were on her Pinterest profile. At that point we had not even discussed the possibility of getting engaged even though we both knew it was inevitable. Trying to keep it a secret I took a screen shot off of her phone, sms’d it to myself (not Whatsapp as I was afraid that she might notice it), contacted Zuyda van Dyk and crossed my fingers that she would fall in love with the ring.

How did you experience your Photographer’s services?

Landi Groenewald from Organictatles really out did herself as our photographer and made us feel completely comfortable in front of the camera. She is very professional at all times and knows how to have fun while on the job. Landi was proactive in looking for places to capture the perfect moment prior to the photo shoot. The photographs you have of the day are the precious memories you get to cherish forever and that is why photography played a big role on our special day.

Who made sure there was good music and sound on the day?

This was purely team work. Lara enjoys more modern music while I enjoy more of the old school classics. I remember sitting one evening working through playlists until 1am in the morning trying the find the perfect wedding songs, when the list was complete I let Lara also have a listen to the song selections to see what she thought. Of course my knowledge of modern music is very limited so she was able to add the final touches for the “after 10pm” music. Our DJ, Justin from Pie in the sky handled the rest. 

 

Who were your caterers and what was on the Menu? 

Delsma Farm Wedding venue did the catering for the day and the food was beautifully prepared and very delicious. 

 

Canapes:
Mini boerewors rolls, mini tacos, spring rolls and bruschetta with caramelised onion and camembert.

Starters:
Rooster koeke with preserves

Mains:
Deboned leg of lamb, stuffed pork neck, blanched green beans and mushrooms and roasted vegetable couscous salad.

Desserts:
Lamingtons, melktert spring rolls and chocolate éclairs

 

Our stunning wedding cake was made by my brother in law, Terrence as a wedding gift. The most delicious carrot cake with naked icing and beautifully decorated with fresh flowers.

 

Any advice to other couples still in the planning process?

I would say take your time to figure out what you want from the day and what it means to you. Once you have an idea everything will flow. Communication is also very important, not only between you and your fiancé but your service providers as well to make sure everyone is on the same page.  The best thing we did was firstly set up a budget and then we divided the responsibilities, so that we both had a part in the planning. Believe me two heads are better than one and you have fun while planning your special day together. We also had an amazing team that helped us and knowing your wedding day is in good hands takes away a lot of the stress.

Best day of our lives and the perfect start to our future together.

Allesverloren – Nadia & Mario

Tell us about how you met and the attributes that drew you to each other.

We met in 2012 while working at the same company. We became good friends and early on we both saw qualities in each other that we liked, however timing was always an issue as either of us were in other relationships at different times. Qualities we share includes reading, being outside, exercising, spending time with family and eating.

How did the proposal go down?

Mario used our one year anniversary as camouflage and organised a weekend away. While we were busy dining at Tokara, Mario had organised with his sister and the venue where we were staying to make up the room with rose petals and champagne. Trying to play it ultra cool Mario didn’t want to give anything away and we stayed a bit longer than anticipated. As we approached the room we heard a clatter as the ice in the champagne bowl had melted and the whole bowl fell to the ground. Between cleaning the mess he went down on one knee and popped the question. There were laughter, tears and a lot of love.

What was the style of your wedding and where did you find your inspiration?

Nadia loved the idea of getting married outside and we found Allesverloren where the ceremony could take place in the woods which was within our budget. We knew what we liked, but without Pinterest and a few Wedding magazines, we would have been a little lost. The colours, maroon and navy blue, were mainly for winter weddings, but we liked how striking they were and went with it.

Why did you choose your venue?

We had actually made an appointment at another venue close by and our parents came through for moral support. Nadia wasn’t quite convinced about the venue so Mario mentioned that he had been at a wedding at Allesverloren and that it was just down the road. As we all walked through the path toward the forest chapel, Nadia gave her mother this look and Mario knew he had to ask whether Allesverloren could accommodate us.

How did you decide on your dress and where did you find it?

Nadia was never one of those girls who dreamed about her perfect wedding dress since she was a little girl. So once the question was popped, the search was on. She didn’t know what she wanted, but knew what she didn’t like. She ended up trying on the first dress at Ever After Bridal and knew immediately that it was the one.

Is there any special story behind your rings? Where did you find them?

We both gave the other one a choice of a few wedding bands to choose from and not so secretly hinted at which each of us would prefer… with the engagement ring Mario chose a Protea design because it is Nadia’s favourite flower and the Protea was a key feature throughout the wedding appearing on the table arrangements as well as Nadia’s bouquet.

Who made sure your make-up and hair looked beautiful?

Mario‘s cousin, Simone Taljaard and Lismari Boonzaaier, helped with all the girls’ hair on the day. They truly did an amazing job and stayed right on schedule during the entire afternoon. The make-up was done by Liezl Visagie, a friend of Mario‘s sister. She is such a stunning human being and Nadia couldn’t help falling in love with her quirkiness and sense of humor right from the start. She made sure everyone looked beautiful and was also done on time. Nadia’s make-up and hair was a personal highlight.

What was the most memorable moment of the day?

For Mario seeing his bride walking down the isle and how well the first dance went considering his two left feet.
For Nadia it was most definitely the sheer excitement of walking down the isle and looking into her new, and somewhat emotional husband’s eyes. It was the happiest moment of my life and I couldn’t have asked for a better service. It was beautiful and spoke to the heart.

Who officiated the ceremony? How did you find him and what made you choose him?

We were a bit clueless as to who we would ask to officiate as the guests were 99% Afrikaans and we attend an English church, so Suzanne who helped organise all of the decor suggested we give Riaan de Villiers a call. He was incredibly nice from the start and his message on the day was absolutely beautiful.

How did you experience your Photographer’s service and where did the importance of photography fall in your day?

Our Photographer Landi Groenewald from Organictales was amazing since the first day we had coffee with her to meet up about the different wedding packages. We were searching for a certain look and feel that was captured within her style. She was organised, checked in multiple times and helped us out with service providers throughout the planning phase. On the day she was calm and knew exactly what she wanted from us. Even when the wind was howling it didn’t make her stray from what she wanted to achieve with the end result.
For us the photos will forever hold a special place in our hearts, as it will be the only memory we will have when we’re old and grey.

Who was your videographer and how was the experience of having them present on the day?

Rory from Organictales was our very unexpected, but pleasant surprise. We didn’t plan on having a Videographer, but Landi approached us with the idea and we immediately agreed. He was reserved, but knew what he was doing and gave us great pointers on what to do. We are extremely excited to see what he has in store for us!

Did you have a wedding/event planner and how did this service benefit you before and on the day?

Suzanne Visser from Dear Idea is an old friend of Mario and to be honest we would not have managed without her. She was always willing for a quick cup of coffee just to ease our minds and the decor was stunning. She really was the backbone of the whole day and we will be forever thankful for her.

Who were the caterers who made sure your guests were happy and fed? 

Bertus Bester from Allesverloren is also the chef and the food was out of this world. We decided not to do a starter but asked for their famous Harvest Table which carried our guests through to the main meal. That included roast beef and chicken pie with roast potatoes, cream spinach and veggies. For dessert we had a carrot wedding cake and small jars of peppermint crisp and cheesecake.

Any advice to other couples still in the planning process? What was the most difficult and what really helped?

We would have been wrecks without Suzanne from Dear Idea who took all the stress of the decor and flowers off our hands including making a mock-table, setting up on the day and doing the delivery to and from the venue. If it’s within your budget, we would highly recommend hiring someone to help as you don’t necessarily know the industry as well as they do.

Tell us about the Honeymoon!!

Mario kept the destination a secret right up to when we checked in at the airport. We spent our honeymoon in the beautiful town of Ao Nang in Krabi. We had the best time in the most beautiful destination. From spending days on neighbouring islands to just laying on the beach at Railay with a book. It was an unforgettable experience which ended off with two days of shopping in Bangkok.

Benjamin & Francelle – Paarl Wedding

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date. The Proposal

Ben proposed during a getaway in January 2018. We went glamping near Caledon, and one evening before dinner he just went down on one knee and popped the question. There was no cellphone signal, so we had to wait two days to tell everyone!

A Golden Dress.

My dress is a one of a kind Elria Ellis creation. Elria is my aunt, and she asked me whether I would allow her to make the dress. Naturally I said YES! We discussed the colour and design at length, and since I was not keen on a normal white dress, we decided that gold, with and undertone of grey, would be the best choice. It took her just under a year to make the dress, and it will forever be one of my most prized possessions.

The Infamous Ring Adventure

Oh my goodness, my ring! That story has become something of a legend. First of all, it is a Jack Friedman ring, with Benjamins’ grandmother’ diamond. So not only is this a beautiful ring, but it has a legacy.
I was driving to school one Friday morning in March, and a truck broke down on the N1. All the cars were at a complete standstill. While we waited for the truck to be cleared. I decided to put cream on my hands. I took off my ring, placed in my lap, put on cream and promptly forgot about it. At some point people started getting out of their cars, and I followed suit. I was wearing a long dress, and with the motion of getting out of the car, the ring fell onto the side of the road. I had no idea. It was only when I got to Paarl, and looked down at my hands somewhere around 10am, that I realised that my ring was gone. I promptly died and emotional death. I had no idea where my ring was. After racking my brain I remembered the cream and the N1 and the getting out of my car. I asked permission to leave school early, and I went back to search. I searched the entire stretch of road for longer than an hour, but found nothing. I called my mom. She was in a state of shock. My only thought was telling Benjamin that I lost his grandmother’s diamond. I thought he would leave me for sure! He worked late that evening. I did not sleep well.
The next morning, my mother phoned me, waking me up. She declared that she and my father are on the way to the N1 to search for the ring. She was adamant that it was somewhere there. I went to assist them, but not expecting anything  – I already searched every inch. Before I left, I had to tell Benjamin. I remember him being incredibly calm and collected. He was not mad. All he said was, “we’ll get through this, my love”. My mom, dad and I searched on the side of the N1 as cars raced past us. After quite some time. My mother stood still, just clutching her chest. I did not understand why she did that, until I went to her and she showed me the ring. She said, “I found it.” She, my dad and I promptly started crying. Next to the N1. In our tracksuits. On a Saturday morning 7am.
And that is the story not of how I lost my ring, but how it was FOUND.

110 Best Wedding Photography 2017

– A reminiscent chapter

2017 has been nothing short of one of my favourite, yet challenging life journeys yet.  It definitely was not easy.  After relocating to South Africa and setting up camp in Cape Town, it has been a non stop adventure.

I can proudly say that my first year back in South Africa, has been a big success.  It was my most testing year of life to date with record amounts of challenges both personally and in business. Hours upon hours of hard work, late nights and early mornings.  But the sweetest of all was hands down the fact that I got to meet so many beautiful, inspiring and interesting individuals – both as clients and as fellow industry trend setters.

It is the biggest honour when someone entrusts you with one of the most important tasks at their wedding.  Documenting a love story so true and deep it sometimes leaves me heavily affected and love sick.  After all, this is about love in it’s entirety.  And as cliche as it sounds – what is more beautiful in this world than love?

After documenting the last love story for 2017 recently, I thought it a good time to look back at all my favourite wedding photography of the year.  I compiled them all together here as my favourite 110 photographs in no particular order.  Some of them are favourites purely because of the moment and story behind the story and other are favourites because of photographic appeal.

Warm Karoo Wedding

A Hot Summer’s Chapter

I will always enjoy weddings in the Free State.  Not only do I get to visit my parents, but I also get to reminisce on my childhood.  The smells, the sounds and even the skies – it all comes together in to one past dream.  The warm weather on this wedding day truly emphasized all those senses which all led to a wedding I am unlikely to ever forget.  Here follows the story of Ilze & Jacques’s tale.

 

A High School Sweetheart Promise:

Jacques and I are high school sweethearts. We met at a sweet-sixteen barefoot-and-headband-party. He fell in love first and I followed a few weeks later. Fast forward six years down the line and we’ve never been happier.

She: Since the moment I met him, he made me laugh. He was a rugby player with an obsession for all things nerdy. From the get-go he made me laugh. He’s a romantic at heart and from the first day we met, he made me feel special and valuable.

He: The moment I met her I could immediately see there was something different about this girl. I am normally indecisive about what I want and if, I in fact want anything. But I knew that I had to have her. Her beauty, her drive and her honesty are some of the many qualities that intrigued me from that first moment. She did not make it easy but I was determined to pursue her.

 

A Treasure Hunt to “I Do”

I’m a very intuitive person so it takes quite a lot to actually surprise me. He planned out every single detail like a Russian spy. Under false pretences, we flew down to Strand in Cape Town. I was under the impression that we were there to celebrate Jacques’ grandfathers’ birthday with the family. Everyone was in on it. My mother-in-law actually packed fake suitcases as they were supposedly driving from Bloemfontein to Cape Town just a few hours after us. I suspected something but convinced myself that it was selfish to think of my own engagement on Grandpa Kelly’s birthday.

When we got to their holiday home in the Strand, I was actually the one to suggest that we go and have a late lunch down the road. At the restaurant, Jacques got up and went to the restroom. A waiter brought me an envelope saying that I was supposed to go outside and get into a white car.

When I got outside, the whole street was full of white cars. I was confused for a moment and scared that I might get abducted if I got into a strangers car. Luckily I recognised one of our friends in a white car. I got in the car and received a second envelope. It was a treasure hunt. I had to figure out every clue on my own and every envelope had a puzzle piece with it. Eventually the clues led me back to their home. Once upstairs, I had to assemble the puzzle which turned out to say “Sal jy met my …”

The last clue asked me to go down to the beach and find him. When I got there, a small table with candles and champagne was set up. He was standing on the windy beach and first mocked me for taking so long to build the puzzle. He then asked me what the puzzle had said. I told him that the puzzle was incomplete and only said, “Sal jy met my…” He then opened up his jacket and he was wearing a black shirt that said “TROU?”  With not a single doubt in my mind I said yes!

Laid back Inspiration

From the start we wanted a wedding with a relaxed and laid back atmosphere. We lived and breathed the motto:  A beautiful wedding people might remember for a while, but a fun wedding they’ll remember forever.  I actually had the décor and venue figured out before we even got engaged (after six years a girls’ mind cannot help but wander).

I got inspiration form everything and everyone. Lots of older people actually had some very good ideas and some parts of the wedding just popped into my mind while I was at work. Lastly, I can honestly say that I am now a professional Pinterest guru.

 

A Venue that captured their hearts:

When we first started talking about marriage we drove around Bloemfontein and when we drove onto the Warm Karoo property. I told Jacques that this was where I was going to get married. After the engagement we viewed every other venue in and around Bloemfontein but my heart was already set on Warm Karoo and no other venue could match it.  I was especially drawn to the wooden beams in the chapel and in the main hall. I thought that it would make for great photos, and it did.

A Dress made to fit:

I never really tried on a lot of dresses. I knew what I liked and what I felt comfortable in. I’ve always said that I want a wedding dress that fits me and not a dress that I have to fit in to.  I’ve never heard a bad word uttered about Julie Wedderburn and I now know why. She made me feel so comfortable and confident. She is a perfectionist and really does go the extra mile. She was honest without being offensive and if I could do everything over, I would choose her time and time again.

 

Friends on Hair & Make-Up:

Long-time friend and my most trusted beautician, Lucinda Lombard from Almyhart was in charge of making my bridesmaids even prettier than they already were. Amy Olden did my own airbrush makeup and made me feel so good about myself. Even without the makeup. Jana Azar is also a friend of mine and I wouldn’t have trusted anyone else to do our hair on the big day.

 

When hearts collide – The most memorable moment:

Her: The most memorable moment of the day was when I touched his arm at the end of the aisle. I was nervous as my Dad and I walked down the aisle. When my Dad handed me over to him and I got to put my arm through his, my whole body relaxed and my heart felt at home. I knew that what we were doing on this day was straight out of the hand of God.

His: My most memorable moment is captured in the moment right before she walked in and the moment I saw her as she walked in. I am normally not an emotional person and I was not sure if I was going to shed a tear at the moment she walked in. But before her song started playing, a bag piper named Mark played a beautiful song to celebrate her Scottish heritage and that was when the waterworks started.

An officiant with soul:

Pastor Leon Fourie officiated the ceremony. He and his wife have been married for 25 years and we wanted someone dear to our hearts to marry us. We also did our pre-marital counselling with Pastor Leon and his wife so he knows us on a personal and individual level as well.  I would recommend pre-marital counselling to every newly engaged couple as it keeps your mind on what’s actually important during wedding planning and helps with what comes after it.

 

A Photographer who walks the journey:

Just after our engagement, Jacques and I discussed three things that we wanted from our photographer. We wanted someone with experience, someone who would be committed to us and with whom we could form a comfortable and relaxed friendship. And lastly, we wanted great results.  Organictales ticked all the boxes and then included a few more. Her service before, on and after the day was impeccable.

The importance of our wedding photos came down to this: After spending months and months planning the cake and décor and dress and shoes and venue and food and wine and vows and speeches, we wanted it all captured in time in a creative and artistic way. We want to look back in 40 years’ time and still feel the same emotions that we experienced on our wedding day. We wanted photos that would last a lifetime because that’s what we want out of our marriage.

 

 

A professional and creative videographer:

A wedding video was one of the few things my new husband just wouldn’t budge on. After realizing what a wedding costs in real life we desperately tried to cut down on a few things. I immediately thought that cutting the wedding video would help. Luckily, Jacques wouldn’t hear any of it. It was one of the few things about the wedding that he wouldn’t compromise on. Today I can only thank him for that.

Raisingflags is as good as it gets. We decided to get wedding videographers as well as a photographer because we wanted every single moment, every laugh and every cry captured in time. A photo captures a moment in time, but we wanted to capture the atmosphere of the day as well. Francois and his team delivered professional and friendly service, both before on and after our wedding day.  It was great to hear that our photographer and videographer actually organized to meet each other before the wedding, just to plan how, when and where they would be shooting.

The Rings:

I wanted a yellow gold ring because I wanted to do things differently. I originally chose a design that, Pinterest recommended. Jacques received two of the three diamonds from his parents and bought the third one himself. My sister designed the ring according to the three diamonds and included some of the original design as well.

We chose Jacques’ ring while walking around in jewellery shops. I wanted his ring to also have some gold tones to match mine. He wears his rubber wedding ring most days but puts on his real one every chance he gets.

A Coordinator included:

Warm Karoo includes its own wedding coordinator. She comes in a small and friendly but dynamite package that is Tammy.  Tammy was there to guide and advice from the beginning to the end. I trusted her with literally EVERYTHING. It was because of her that I could rest easy the night before the wedding.

 

Music to bring the feet out to dance:

Starsound delivered exactly what we asked for. It was great that they knew the venue and that the venue knew them. From the entrance until the last song, the DJ’s were great. We could not have asked for better.

 

A Perfect day to cherish:

I wouldn’t change anything about the day. It was perfect from the beginning to the end. If I could, I would make the day a few hours longer. Just to celebrate our perfect day for as long as I could.

 

Ilze & Jacques’s Advice to Other Couples:

To any couples still in the whirlwind that is planning a wedding, I would advise that you make time for your better half without all the wedding mojo. It’s really important to try and switch off from wedding planning and to remind yourself why and for whom, you are doing it all. Remember that your wedding is just one day in the rest of your life. Try and soak up all the little details, capture every moment in your mind. Make time for your guests, but do spend a few moments alone with the most important person there.

Villiersdorp Love Story

A Theewaterskloof Dam Engagement.

We took a lovely little road trip up to Villiersdorp for this fun session.

It was sad to see how empty the dam is and the wind was poking fun at us, ripping through our hair and down ours spines.  But what it brought with it was gorgeous;  The clouds formed a big blanket over the background mountains, and as the wind kept pushing through, the sun broke through those clouds for a few split seconds.  This allowed the sun to cast its rays directly in to my lens only to create the most beautiful sunflare images yet.

I would most certainly want to return to this amazing landscape for some more amazing photos.
